Papers, 1916-1943 (bulk 1916-1919).

The collection primarily consists of letters from Tyndall to his wife, Dean Spellman Tyndall, during World War I. Included are official military papers, historical material on the 150th Field Artillery of the Rainbow Division, biographical material on Tyndall, and several letters to his children. Topics include Tyndall's training at Camp Mills, Long Island, N.Y.; his service in France; and the march to Germany. Also included is Tyndall's diary, 1918-1919; a map of the German Empire, 1917; and a photocopy of a transcribed transcript from a captured Japanese soldier, 1943. Postcards of France and Germany and photographs of Tyndall are stored in Visual Collections.

Robert H. Tyndall was born in Indianapolis. He worked as a tailor, a banker, and a businessman before being elected mayor of Indianapolis in 1942, a position he held until his death.
